I'm so excited about this room. When we bought this house almost 8 years ago, we had no real use for this bathroom. It was ugly. Yellow tile in the shower, brown cabinets and lime green marble countertop and linoleum floor. I looked and dug and found a picture (film so i took a pic with my phone but you get the idea :D )
Essentially we hung a shower curtain, threw down a rug and called it a day. We had other matters to attend to on this house first. Not long after we moved in we realized that wasn't going to work...there was mold behind the cabinets and behind the tile.
I totally gutted the bathroom...right down to the studs. We had a guy come in and do the drywall and tile work. Ordered cabinets and silestone counter from lowe's and voila...it was a nice clean bathroom. white tile, new tub, new toilet, white floor tile and white cabinets...nice and neutral. But again we didn't really have much use for that room and just threw down a new rug, hung up a new shower curtain and moved on. I still haven't found pictures of the after...lol
Enter...new baby girl Nora. I needed a baby girl bathroom. I mean...really an infant needs a pretty bathroom, right? When the drywall and texture work was done I had a very very pale green paint put on the walls and that was perfect for what I planned next. Off on a mission with my mom searching for vintage plates with roses on them. It was in my head that my Nora Rose needed a very shabby bathroom. We bought lots of various sized plates and saucers and i hung them on the wall around the ceiling like a border. Hung some shelves on the wall, put up a shabby chic shower curtain, a girly white mirror and again...I was done. I will try to find a picture of the bathroom but seriously...i think my children only use our bathroom and therefore I have no pictures of the shabby bathroom.
That new baby girl is no longer a baby and has a very strong opinion. She recently told me that her bathroom is not very nice and she really just doens't like it. The colors and roses are not her style. We tossed ideas and threw color pallettes and stuff around but we never could agree on anything. I wanted to do a beach theme and she wanted a rock and roll theme.
At the time we were tossing bathroom ideas around we were also thinking of moving the girls back into a room together. That of course brought bedding ideas to the table. Nora saw this bedding and swore she had to have it...
Ok...I'm not really big on turquoise that bold and I'm not a big fan of leopard print. Not to mention the fact that it just seemed really grown up for a 6 and 2 year old. (on a side note we have since found bedding we agree on for their room and i'll be doing their room before the summer is over)
The one constant nora mentioned was wanting black and white photos of elvis and the beatles in her "leopard turquosie room". So I began tossing ideas in my head for a funky bathroom.
I found these frames at ikea with matte for only $4.99 each. I bought 5.
I started searching online for the pictures I wanted to use...I knew per Nora I had to have the beatles, Elvis and the "my fair lady" girl aka audrey hepburn. Add marilyn monroe and betty grable...voila!
When I first decided on the black and white pictures I knew that I would be using black and white with some sort of blue color. Blue is one of my favorite colors but finding the right shade of blue is never easy! I couldn't quite decide on a color. I literally bought 8 different sample blue colors from lowe's. they went from too turquoise to too green. I ended up taking a tiffany's box to lowe's and color matching. Funny thing, I was afraid Nora would hate the color but nope...Nora loved the color and said it was PERFECT! Because it was a color match I don't really have a "name" to share. But Behr's sweet rhapsody is very very close and Sherwin Williams Mariner is also very close.
I also wanted some hooks for the girl's to hang up their towels and robes. I put up my own "board and batten"...I cheated and hung bead board paintable wallpaper. I put thin strips over the wallpaper seams. I think it turned out really cute!

I bought inexpensive 2 packs of brass hooks. I sprayed them black to match. I think it was less than $5 for 4 hooks. Since the screws were brass also...I used a black wet paint pen to paint the screws :D
Originally I had wanted a ruffled anthro style shower curtain. unfortunately the blue they had just wasn't working for me. I thought about making one in the blues I wanted but to be perfectly honest I wasn't really sure how well it was going to work with blue walls. I started looking at the stores while we were out and about for something to catch my eye. Hello target! They had two options...a damask and a zebra. That gave me the black and white I needed and wanted. I decided the damask was too grown up and decided to go with the zebra as it was younger and funkier...but it was still not exactly what I wanted.
The shower curtain i took down in the girl's bathroom was a pink/green floral with ruffles along the top. Figured if I found some ribbon or fabric that matched the blue on the walls I could do the same with the zebra curtain. Lucky for me Kona cotton had an exact match! On a side note...nora asked me to make she and maddie a skirt or dress out of this old shower curtain :D
So here it is...
The curtain hooks were inexpensive and very plain from target.
I added some rhinestones and perfect...
The vinyl "you are gorgeous" came from hobby lobby at 50% off.
It came with bling...have I mentioned i have a soft spot for all things shiny??
So that takes care of part of the room...I'll post part 2 soon!
until next time...S
